Is this a 0.2A Fuse, or a 2W Incandescent Bulb?

A heads up to you multimeter owners who are looking to protect your meter properly. Look out for incorrect fuse ratings.


Just today I received a pack of 10 fuses from an Ali Express seller. I ordered 0.2 Amp, 250V fast blow fuses, and that is how the fuses were marked. I did a quick resistance test to determine whether or not the resistance of the fuse is approximately correct. I was expecting around 2.0 ohms*, and the fuses measured 0.3 ohms. Then I grabbed a 0.25 Amp fuse from known-good stock, and it measured 1.0 ohms. So I knew something was wrong!


I proceeded to sacrifice one of the fuses to confirm. Sure enough, the filament of the fuse allowed more current to flow than it should have. At over four times its rating, it provided a orange hot glow, never blowing.



This was not the first time I bought fuses that were bad. More often than not, when buying from such sources, I receive bad fuses. My suggestion is to go for reputable distributors who sell authentic name brand product.


*Here is a list I recently put together for my own reference. I averaged out values based on a compilation of specification sheets. Depending on the exact fuse size and the manufacturer, the actual resistance will vary. Note: when doing a resistance check on fuses less than 500 mA, your instrument might raise the temperature of the filament and increase the resistance above the "cold" state. Before measuring, check your ohmmeter current to ensure the current is about 10% or less of the fuse rating. Analog meters supply around 50 mA, Digital meters typically supply from 0.2 mA to 4 mA during low range resistance measurements.



If they went to all the trouble to make glass, embossed endcaps, assemble the product, package it, and ship it to me, why couldn't they simply use the proper type of wire to meet the specification? That's something I'll never understand. I won't rant too much here. I'm sure you agree this is a dangerous situation that we need to look out for.
