HP 3468A CONUNDRUM

I've just completed another RETRO-TECH review this time I've highlighted the Hewlett-Packard HP 3468A which was an incredibly feature rich and great benchmeter from the 80's.

I've recently been going back and forth about the battery upgrade process. Yes, I've picked up a new 3V compatible Lithium replacement. I'm just not thrilled with the prospect of potentially bricking the perfectly good meter while doing the battery replacement !

In case you're not familiar with the HP 3468A the calibration is stored internally via memory and that memory is kept alive by a 3V internal battery.

I know there's some precautionary measures to take to perform the upgrade (keep mains powered on while doing the battery replacement etc).

However, seeing as the battery seems in relatively good condition and I know this unit was barely used all these years, does the upgrade make sense at all?

I've heard when the stock battery does go south it deteriorates quickly (much like my crypto portfolio).

So whilst I gather my courage I am curious if anyone has any sage advice as to whether its a necessary procedure or should I take the traditional, if it ain't broken.. route !!

BTW, The HP had an incredible rated 100,000 hours of MTBF.

As always ...vintage multimeters are not only fun to work on but yield some fascinating insight into the technology and workmanship of days gone by.
